Eligibility criteria for Physicians

Member eligibility 

We welcome applications from Physicians practicing within an eligible specialty.

If you have passed MRCP(UK):

You do not require a sponsor and will be awarded the postnominal of MRCP(Glasg).

If you have passed MRCPCH:

You do not require a sponsor and will be awarded the postnominal of MRCPS(Glasg).

If you have not passed either MRCP(UK), but:

  • You practise outside the UK as a specialist trainee and hold a recognised international postgraduate qualification:
    • You require two sponsors (one must be a Glasgow Fellow) and will be awarded the postnominal of MRCPS(Glasg).
  • You practise within the UK:
    • You must arrange to sit a recognised membership exam (e.g. MRCP(UK) or MRCPCH).

If you are a SAS doctor/Specialty Doctor/ Staff Grade/Associate Specialist:

  • Minimum four years' full time specialty training* (or p/t equivalent), you require two sponsors (one must be a Glasgow Fellow) and will be awarded MRCPS(Glasg).
    • *including two years in post for those on the new (post 2021) contract.

Internationally recognised postnominals

MRCP(Glasg) is a GMC acceptable post graduate qualification.

MRCPS(Glasg) is not a GMC acceptable postgraduate qualification.

To be eligible to use a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow postnominal, you must retain your membership.

Sponsors

Sponsors must be Fellows in good standing of the Glasgow College or another UK/Irish Medical or Surgical Royal College (where applicable). If you are unable to provide sponsor(s) who are current Fellows of this College, please refer to our regional and international advisors who may be able to assist.

Fellow eligibility

Fellowship by election of the College is exceptionally offered to physicians who:

  • Are practicing at UK Consultant level or international equivalent, within a physician specialty as listed below
  • Have evidence of career progression
  • Are a senior member of the medical profession and whose published works and attainments are of such distinction as to justify election
  • Are in the opinion of the College have made acknowledged, substantial contributions to their specialty
  • Contribute to the education and training of future doctors
  • Show willingness to contribute to College life
  • If you are a SAS doctor/Specialty Doctor/ Staff Grade/Associate Specialist you must either:
    • be on the GMC specialist register via CESR, CCT or equivalent or;
    • have a minimum 12 yrs PG training, at least 6 years of which in specialty training and in substantive, open contract post

To meet the criteria, applicants must include the following within their detailed and comprehensive CV:

  • Clear description of their current job responsibilities and date commenced
  • Contribution/or willingness to contribute to College life
  • Evidence of ongoing career progression
  • Evidence of educational contribution

Applicants should note that simply meeting the application review criteria does not automatically lead to award of FRCP(Glasg). The decision of the Fellowship Committee is based primarily on the CV which should be unambiguous and presented professionally. The applicant's sponsors should present clear and evidence-based reasons for the Committee to consider awarding the highest award that our Medical Faculty offers.

The decision of the fellowship committee is final.

Current Members upgrading to fellowship

In addition to the criteria above for fellowship, the following applies to current Members upgrading.

Current Members practising in the UK

Eligibility:

  • In a substantive consultant post or equivalent
  • On the GMC specialist register
  • Minimum 5 years post award of membership
  • Sponsor requirement: 1 sponsor (must be a Glasgow Fellow)
  • Postnominal awarded: FRCP(Glasg)

Current Members practising outside the UK

Eligibility:

  • In a substantive consultant post or equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years post award of membership
  • Sponsor requirement: 1 sponsor (must be a Glasgow Fellow)
