Member eligibility
We welcome applications from dental professionals who meet one of the following criteria:
If you have passed the MFDS Part 2 examination or a Specialty Membership Examination with this College:
You do not require a sponsor and will be awarded the postnominal of MFDS RCPS(Glasg) or appropriate specialty designation.
If you hold a Membership qualification from another UK or Irish Royal College (e.g. MJDF, MFDS RCS (England), MFDS RCS (Edinburgh), MFD RCS (Ireland), or a recognised Specialty Membership Examination):
You do not require a sponsor, but you must complete the membership application form and provide evidence of your qualifications to be awarded the postnominal of MFDS RCPS(Glasg) or equivalent specialty designation.
If you have not passed MFDS or an equivalent qualification, or are a Specialist or Specialty Dentist, but wish to apply for membership without examination:
- You need a minimum of 10 years’ post-registration (BDS) experience (the focus is on your professional achievements rather than length of qualification)
- You must have clinical experience and expertise in dental education, research and/or leadership/management
- You need continual and significant contribution to the standing of the dental profession
- You require two sponsors (one must be a Glasgow Fellow) and must complete the membership application form and submit it along with your CV and all supporting documentation.
If you do not have access to appropriate sponsors, please contact us for assistance. Please note that incomplete applications may result in delays.

Sponsors
Sponsors must be Fellows in good standing of the Glasgow College or another UK/Irish Medical or Surgical Royal College (where applicable). If you are unable to provide sponsor(s) who are current Fellows of this College, please refer to our regional and international advisors who may be able to assist. Each sponsor must provide a statement of support.
To help ensure your application process goes as smoothly as possible, please ensure you review the application checklist. Don't hesitate to contact the membership team with any enquiries.
Fellow eligibility
Individuals who have sat and passed one of the ISFE examinations are automatically eligible to join the Faculty as Fellows. Fellowship is also open to those who have a Specialty Fellowship/Fellowship of another UK/Irish Royal College (e.g. FDS RCS(Eng), FDS(Ed), FFD(I)), obtained via examination.
For existing Members seeking elevation to Fellowship, a minimum of 5 years' consecutive Membership of this Faculty of Dental Surgery is expected before nomination.
Fellowship of the Faculty of Dental Surgery is also offered to dental surgeons, specialty or specialist dentists, who have made substantial contributions to their specialty, or who are senior members of the dental profession and whose published works and attainments are of such distinction as to justify election. Ultimately, eligibility will be determined by the Dental Fellowship Sub Committee.
Current Members upgrading to fellowship
For existing Members seeking elevation to Fellowship, a minimum of 5 years' consecutive Membership of this Faculty of Dental Surgery is expected before nomination.
