Overview
MRCP(UK) Part 2 Written is an online examination that builds on the knowledge assessed in Part 1.
It evaluates your ability to apply clinical understanding, make clinical judgements, and take responsibility for:
- prioritising diagnostic or problem lists
- planning investigation
- selecting a plan for immediate management
- selecting a plan for long-term management
- assessing prognosis.
The exam consists of two three hour papers, each containing 100 multiple choice questions which include images. The exam in computer-based, administered by Surpass online via a proctoring service in the UK and internationally.

Apply online through My MRCP(UK). The main steps are:
- Visit the MRCP(UK) website
Go to The Federation and log in to your My MRCP account. - Check that all your personal details are up to date
Fill in details about whether you are in training in the UK or not - Choose your exam centre
Part 2 is delivered online across the UK and online in test centres internationally. Select the location that best suits you. - Submit your application and pay the fee
Complete the booking process through the MRCP(UK) portal. - Receive confirmation and exam details
Part 2 is administered by the Federation team.
Before applying for MRCP(UK) Part 2 Written, candidates must meet specific training and exam prerequisites that ensure readiness for the next stage of postgraduate assessment.
You must have successfully passed the MRCP(UK) Part 1 examination. This is a mandatory requirement for progression to Part 2 and demonstrates a foundational understanding of core medical knowledge.
Candidates should have gained sufficient clinical experience following their Part 1 success. This includes:
- Involvement in direct patient care
- Exposure to a wide range of acute and chronic conditions
- Practice across multiple specialties
This experience is typically achieved through at least 12 months of further postgraduate training and should reflect responsibilities expected at ST2–ST3 level or equivalent.
You do not need to be part of a UK specialty training programme to sit Part 2.
Doctors in international training posts or non-training roles are welcome, provided their experience aligns with the clinical level expected.
